Did the Prophet meet any atheists?
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ did encounter people who rejected his message, including those who could be characterized as atheists or disbelievers. One notable incident is reported in Al-Kafi, where a woman approached the Prophet ﷺ, and he welcomed her. She was from a people who had lost their prophet. The narration describes a fire that came to them, and the Prophet ﷺ intervened to protect them, asking if they would believe in him if he repelled the fire. Despite witnessing this act, they still refused to believe, illustrating their disbelief. The Prophet ﷺ then said to them, "Do you believe in me?" They replied, "No." He further stated, "Then I will die on such and such a day; when I die, bury me, for a calamity of red camels and an unbroken caravan will reach my grave, so dig me up and ask me anything you wish." When he died, they buried him, and later, when the calamity came, they wished to exhume him but ultimately decided against it, saying, What you did not believe in during his life, how can you believe afterwards?
Al-Kafi 1:541.
This account demonstrates the Prophet's direct interactions with those who rejected belief, emphasizing their stubbornness despite witnessing miraculous signs.

Al-Kafi · Book 1, Hadith 541
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) said: Whoever is pleased with women’s blessing in lifespan and increase in provision should maintain his kinship ties. — OR — While the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) was seated, a woman came to him and he welcomed her, took her hand, and seated her. Then he said, 'Daughter of a prophet, your people have lost him.' Khalid ibn Sinan called them but they refused to believe. There was a fire called the Fire of al-Hadathan that came to them every year, consuming some of them, appearing at a known time. The Prophet said to them, 'If I repel it from you, will you believe?' They said, 'Yes.' So the fire came, and the Prophet met it with his cloak, turning it away. Then he followed it until it entered its cave. He entered with it, sat at the cave's mouth while they watched, so he would never leave. Then he came out saying, 'This is this, and all of this is from—this—whom Banu Abs claimed that I would not leave.' And his forehead was moist then he said, 'Do you believe in me?' They replied, 'No.' He said, 'Then I will die on such and such a day; when I die, bury me, for a calamity of red camels and an unbroken caravan will reach my grave, so dig me up and ask me anything you wish.' When he died, they buried him. On that day, when the calamity came, they gathered and wished to exhume him. They said, 'What you did not believe in during his life, how can you believe afterwards? If you dig him up, it will be a disgrace upon you, so leave him.' So they left him.
