Does Islam support pedophilia or child marriages?
Islam does not support pedophilia, and the concept of child marriage is a complex issue that requires careful contextual understanding. The Qur'an does not explicitly mention a minimum age for marriage, but it does emphasize the importance of consent and the responsibilities that come with marriage.
In Surah Al-Ahzaab, Allah outlines the permissible relationships for the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, indicating that marriage should be based on mutual respect and proper conduct: O Prophet! Lo! We have made lawful unto thee thy wives unto whom thou hast paid their dowries...
33:50. This highlights the significance of commitment and the responsibilities involved in marriage.
Additionally, in Surah An-Nisaa, it is stated: And whoso is not able to afford to marry free, believing women, let them marry from the believing maids whom your right hands possess...
4:25. This verse emphasizes that marriage should occur under conditions of mutual agreement and respect, which inherently suggests a level of maturity and understanding.
The historical context in which marriages occurred during the time of the Prophet ﷺ included practices that differ from contemporary norms. Many scholars assert that marriage at a young age was culturally acceptable in various societies, not limited to Islamic culture. However, it is important to note that the teachings of Islam emphasize protecting the rights and welfare of individuals, particularly the vulnerable, including children.
Classical scholars have interpreted these verses within their historical context, and contemporary scholars often stress the importance of consent, maturity, and the welfare of individuals when discussing marriage today. Many modern Muslim communities advocate for setting legal minimum ages for marriage to protect the rights of children and ensure that they are ready for such commitments.
In summary, while historical practices included early marriages, Islam fundamentally promotes responsibility, consent, and the welfare of individuals, which aligns with the modern understanding that child marriages should be approached with caution and respect for the rights of children.

O Prophet! Lo! We have made lawful unto thee thy wives unto whom thou hast paid their dowries, and those whom thy right hand possesseth of those whom Allah hath given thee as spoils of war, and the daughters of thine uncle on the father's side and the daughters of thine aunts on the father's side, and the daughters of thine uncle on the mother's side and the daughters of thine aunts on the mother's side who emigrated with thee, and a believing woman if she give herself unto the Prophet and the Prophet desire to ask her in marriage - a privilege for thee only, not for the (rest of) believers - We are Aware of that which We enjoined upon them concerning their wives and those whom their right hands possess - that thou mayst be free from blame, for Allah is ever Forgiving, Merciful.

And whoso is not able to afford to marry free, believing women, let them marry from the believing maids whom your right hands possess. Allah knoweth best (concerning) your faith. Ye (proceed) one from another; so wed them by permission of their folk, and give unto them their portions in kindness, they being honest, not debauched nor of loose conduct. And if when they are honourably married they commit lewdness they shall incur the half of the punishment (prescribed) for free women (in that case). This is for him among you who feareth to commit sin. But to have patience would be better for you. Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
