How does one pray during an airplane flight?

When praying during an airplane flight, there are specific guidelines derived from Islamic teachings that accommodate the unique circumstances of travel.

In general, the Qur'an permits shortening prayers during travel, as stated: And when ye go forth in the land, it is no sin for you to curtail (your) worship if ye fear that those who disbelieve may attack you. In truth the disbelievers are an open enemy to you. 4:101. This flexibility acknowledges the challenges of performing prayers while on the move.

In addition, there are narrations from the Imams that provide practical instructions for praying in circumstances such as being on a ship, which can be analogous to being on an airplane. For instance, it is narrated: I once heard abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, being asked about Salat (prayer) in the ship. He (the Imam) said, ‘If you can come out to hard ground, you must do so; but if you cannot do so, then perform Salat (prayer) standing, if you cannot do so, then perform Salat (prayer) while sitting and try to make it toward al-Qiblah (al-Ka‘bah).’ Al-Kafi 84:5516.

These teachings suggest that if one is unable to stand due to the constraints of the airplane, they can pray while sitting, and it is preferred to face the Qiblah if possible. The essence of these teachings is to maintain the practice of prayer even in less than ideal conditions, while also ensuring that the act of worship remains sincere and connected to Allah.
