Should we show respect to our gadgets?

The Qur'an provides guidance on the importance of respect and proper conduct, which can be extended to how we treat our belongings, including gadgets. In Surah Al-Kahf, it is stated: Lo! We have placed all that is on the earth as an ornament thereof that We may try them: which of them is best in conduct. 18:7. This verse emphasizes that everything on Earth, including our possessions, should be treated with care and respect as a part of our conduct.

In addition, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ emphasized respect and consideration in various aspects of life, which can be applied to our interaction with our possessions. He taught about the importance of honoring those in our lives, as reflected in a narration where he said, whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should honor his guest; whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should uphold family ties; whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should speak good or remain silent Sahih al-Bukhari 78:165SunniSAHIH. While this hadith specifically addresses interactions with people, the underlying principle of respect can certainly extend to the way we handle and care for our gadgets.

Therefore, treating our gadgets with respect reflects our overall attitude towards responsibility and care for the things we have, aligning with the Qur'anic call to conduct ourselves well and the teachings of the Prophet ﷺ regarding respect and consideration.
