The Hijab and the Smile
The concept of hijab in Islam is addressed in several verses of the Qur'an, providing guidance on modesty for women. One significant verse states: And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and be modest, and to display of their adornment only that which is apparent, and to draw their veils over their bosoms, and not to reveal their adornment save to their own husbands or fathers or husbands' fathers, or their sons or their husbands' sons, or their brothers or their brothers' sons or sisters' sons, or their women, or their slaves, or male attendants who lack vigour, or children who know naught of women's nakedness. And let them not stamp their feet so as to reveal what they hide of their adornment. And turn unto Allah together, O believers, in order that ye may succeed.
24:31. This verse emphasizes the importance of modesty and specifies how women should behave and dress in public to maintain their dignity and respect.
Additionally, in Surah Al-Ahzaab, another verse instructs: O Prophet! Tell thy wives and thy daughters and the women of the believers to draw their cloaks close round them (when they go abroad). That will be better, so that they may be recognised and not annoyed. Allah is ever Forgiving, Merciful.
33:59. This verse further reinforces the idea of covering oneself to prevent unwanted attention and harassment, ensuring that women are recognized as respectable members of society.
The practice of hijab is also supported by hadith. For example, it is narrated that a companion asked the Prophet ﷺ whether the Mothers of the Believers should wear the veil, leading to the revelation of the verse regarding the hijab. The hadith states: I said to the Prophet, 'The righteous and the sinful come to you. Would you order the Mothers of the Believers to wear the veil?' Then Allah revealed the verse of the veil.
Sahih al-Bukhari 65:312. This illustrates the significance of the hijab in Islamic teachings as a means of maintaining modesty and respect in the community.
Overall, the hijab is more than just a piece of clothing; it represents a commitment to modesty and dignity as described in the Qur'an and exemplified in the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
