Was the prophet sinless?

In Islamic tradition, the belief regarding the sinlessness of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ varies among scholars and schools of thought.

From the Sunni perspective, it is commonly held that while the Prophet ﷺ was a human being and capable of making mistakes, he was divinely protected from committing major sins (known as "al-Ma'sum"). This protection ensures that he acted in accordance with God's will in delivering the message of Islam. In this context, the Prophet's actions and words are seen as a model for Muslims to follow, and his sinlessness is emphasized in ensuring his reliability as a messenger of Allah. The Prophet himself is reported to have said, "None of you will be saved by his deeds." This indicates that, while he is highly revered, he nevertheless relies on Allah's mercy.

In Shia belief, the concept of infallibility is taken further. Shia scholars argue that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, along with the Imams, is considered to be completely sinless, having been chosen and protected by Allah from any form of sin or error. This view maintains that their actions are perfect and that they are free from any faults, which serves to preserve the integrity of their teachings and leadership.

Thus, while there is a general agreement on the high status of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, the interpretations of his sinlessness differ, with Sunnis acknowledging his reliance on divine mercy and Shia emphasizing his complete infallibility.
