What is the fate of someone who died never having heard of Islam?

The fate of someone who dies without having heard of Islam is a topic addressed in both the Qur'an and hadith literature. In Surah At-Tawba, it is stated: And never (O Muhammad) pray for one of them who dieth, nor stand by his grave. Lo! they disbelieved in Allah and His messenger, and they died while they were evil-doers. 9:84 This verse emphasizes the gravity of dying in disbelief after having rejected the message.

However, there are also teachings that provide a more nuanced perspective on those who may not have received the message of Islam. Sahih Muslim narrates that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: By the One in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, no one from this nation of mine—whether Jew or Christian—hears about me and then dies without believing in what I was sent with except that he will be one of the companions of the Fire. In contrast, Al-Kafi mentions that no one faces death except that Satan assigns one of his devils to command him to deny the faith and cast doubt upon his religion until the soul departs. The narration advises that believers should instruct the dying to recite the testimony of faith, indicating a focus on the importance of ending one's life on a note of belief, if possible.

Scholars like Ibn Kathir and others explain that individuals who did not hear the message of Islam may be judged differently in the Hereafter. They might be tested by Allah on the Day of Judgment, and their fate would depend on their response to that test.

Thus, while there are stern warnings for those who knowingly reject the message of Islam, there is also an understanding that those who never had the opportunity to hear it may be treated with mercy and justice by Allah. Ultimately, the decision rests with Allah, the Most Merciful and Just.
