What is the maximum time for a man to leave his wife alone?

The Qur'an provides specific guidelines regarding the period a man may leave his wife alone, particularly in the context of divorce or the death of a spouse. In Surah Al-Baqarah, it states: Those who forswear their wives must wait four months; then, if they change their mind, lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful. 2:226. This indicates that when a man pronounces a forswear (ila), he has a maximum waiting period of four months to reconsider his decision regarding the marriage.

Additionally, in the context of a wife mourning her deceased husband, the Qur'an specifies that Such of you as die and leave behind them wives, they (the wives) shall wait, keeping themselves apart, four months and ten days. 2:234. This is known as the 'iddah period for widows, during which they are not allowed to remarry.

Ibn Kathir explains that the four-month period is crucial for a man to reflect on his commitment, and if he does not reconcile with his wife during this time, he must proceed with the divorce. This reflects the importance of maintaining the welfare of both parties involved in a marriage (Tafsir Ibn Kathir).
