What is the meaning of Shafa'ah (Sunni view)?
The concept of Shafa'ah, or intercession, in Sunni belief refers to the ability of certain individuals, particularly the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, to intercede on behalf of others before Allah on the Day of Judgment. This belief is rooted in various Qur'anic verses and hadiths that articulate the nature and significance of intercession.
One of the key verses in the Qur'an that touches on this concept is found in Surah Al-Maaida: And unto thee have We revealed the Scripture with the truth, confirming whatever Scripture was before it, and a watcher over it. So judge between them by that which Allah hath revealed...
5:48. This verse emphasizes adherence to divine guidance, setting the stage for understanding the role of intercession as a means of seeking Allah's mercy and forgiveness.
In the hadith literature, several narrations support the notion of intercession. For instance, it is reported in Sahih al-Bukhari that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated: I asked the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, 'Which mosque was established first?' He said, 'Al-Masjid Al-Haram.' I asked, 'Then which one?' He said, 'Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa.' I asked, 'How far apart are they?' He said, 'Forty (some measure).' Then he added: 'Wherever you are when the prayer time comes, pray, for the earth is a mosque for you.'
Sahih al-Bukhari 60:97. This emphasizes the connection of prayer and intercession, as it highlights the importance of worship in seeking Allah’s favor.
Ibn Kathir explains that the Prophet's ﷺ intercession will occur at various stages on the Day of Resurrection, where he will intercede for his followers to be admitted into Paradise. This intercession is seen as a significant act of mercy for the believers.
In summary, Shafa'ah in Sunni thought emphasizes the Prophet's ﷺ role as an intercessor on behalf of believers, demonstrating Allah's mercy and the importance of seeking forgiveness and guidance through prayer and righteous actions.

And unto thee have We revealed the Scripture with the truth, confirming whatever Scripture was before it, and a watcher over it. So judge between them by that which Allah hath revealed, and follow not their desires away from the truth which hath come unto thee. For each We have appointed a divine law and a traced-out way. Had Allah willed He could have made you one community. But that He may try you by that which He hath given you (He hath made you as ye are). So vie one with another in good works. Unto Allah ye will all return, and He will then inform you of that wherein ye differ.
