Why are converts to Islam called reverts?

The term "revert" is often used to describe converts to Islam based on the belief that every person is born with an innate understanding of God, referred to as "fitrah." This belief suggests that when someone embraces Islam, they are returning to their original state of submission to Allah, which they may have strayed from due to various influences or life circumstances.

In Surah Al-Maaida, it is emphasized that those who turn away from their faith will be replaced by others whom Allah loves and who love Him, illustrating the importance of remaining steadfast in one's belief. The verse states: O ye who believe! Whoso of you becometh a renegade from his religion, (know that in his stead) Allah will bring a people whom He loveth and who love Him, humble toward believers, stern toward disbelievers, striving in the way of Allah, and fearing not the blame of any blamer. Such is the grace of Allah which He giveth unto whom He will. Allah is All-Embracing, All-Knowing. 5:54 This reinforces the notion that faith is inherent to human nature and that a true return to faith is a return to one's original disposition.

Furthermore, when discussing apostasy and the consequences of turning away from faith, the Qur'an notes, As for such, their guerdon is that on them rests the curse of Allah and of angels and of men combined. 3:87 This underscores the seriousness with which apostasy is viewed, further aligning with the idea that embracing Islam is a return to one's true nature.

The combination of these perspectives forms the basis for calling converts "reverts," as it reflects the belief that they are returning to their innate state of faith in God.
