Why did Allah encourage people to come to the Prophet (pbuh) so that he would plead to Allah for forgiveness for them?
Allah encourages people to come to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) for intercession and forgiveness due to the Prophet's unique status and the mercy that Allah has bestowed upon him. This is reflected in the Qur'an, where Allah emphasizes the importance of the Prophet as a means of guidance and forgiveness. For example, in Surah An-Nisaa, it states, We sent no messenger save that he should be obeyed by Allah's leave. And if, when they had wronged themselves, they had but come unto thee and asked forgiveness of Allah, and asked forgiveness of the messenger, they would have found Allah Forgiving, Merciful.
4:64. This verse indicates that approaching the Prophet for forgiveness is a means for believers to seek Allah's mercy.
The significance of the Prophet's intercession is further illustrated in hadith literature. Sahih al-Bukhari narrates an incident where the Prophet (peace be upon him) explains the Day of Resurrection. He describes how people will seek intercession, stating, Then people will say, 'See what has befallen you! Do you not look for someone to intercede for you to your Lord?' Some will say to others, 'Go to Adam.'... Finally, they will come to Muhammad (peace be upon him) and say, 'You are the Messenger of Allah and the Seal of the Prophets; Allah has forgiven you your past and future sins. Intercede for us.'
Sahih al-Bukhari 65:234. This illustrates that the Prophet's intercession is not only a source of hope for believers but also a reflection of his elevated position among the messengers of Allah.
Furthermore, the Prophet's practice of seeking forgiveness for himself and others emphasizes the importance of repentance and intercession. He would frequently say, "O Allah! Forgive me what I have done before and after, secretly and openly, and what I have gone beyond in, and You know best. You are my God; there is no deity but You." (Tafsir Ibn Kathir). This reflects the Prophet's humility and his role as a mediator between Allah and His creation, encouraging believers to seek forgiveness through him.
In summary, Allah encourages people to come to the Prophet for forgiveness as a means of receiving mercy and guidance, highlighting the Prophet's unique role in interceding for believers on the Day of Judgment.

Sahih al-Bukhari 65:234
Sahih al-Bukhari · Book 65, Hadith 234 · Narrated by Abu Huraira
The Prophet (peace be upon him) was brought some meat, and he raised his hand towards it, for he liked it, then he took a bite from it. Then he said, "I will be the master of the people on the Day of Resurrection. Do you know why?" He said, "Allah will gather the first and the last people on one plain. The caller will call them, their eyesight will be sharp, and the sun will come close to them, so they will experience distress and anguish beyond what they can bear. Then people will say, 'See what has befallen you! Do you not look for someone to intercede for you to your Lord?' Some will say to others, 'Go to Adam.' They will come to Adam and say, 'You are the father of mankind; Allah created you with His own hands and breathed into you of His Spirit and commanded the angels to prostrate to you. Intercede for us with your Lord; do you not see what is happening to us? Do you not see what has come upon us?' Adam will say, 'My Lord is angry today with a wrath never before and never after. He forbade me the tree, but I disobeyed myself, myself, myself. Go to someone else.' They will then go to Noah, who will say similar words, then to Abraham, Moses, Jesus (peace be upon them all), each declaring that Allah’s wrath is upon them and mentioning their own shortcomings or forbidden acts. Finally, they will come to Muhammad (peace be upon him) and say, 'You are the Messenger of Allah and the Seal of the Prophets; Allah has forgiven you your past and future sins. Intercede for us.' He will go and prostrate under the Throne of Allah, and Allah will open for him a door of praise and glorification never opened for anyone before. Then it will be said to him, 'Raise your head and ask, and intercede.' He will raise his head and say, 'My nation, my nation, my nation.' It will be said, 'Enter with those of your nation who are not to be reckoned with by the gate on the right of Paradise. They share the other gates with the rest of the people.' And by Allah, the distance between the two gates of Paradise is like the distance between Mecca and Himyar or between Mecca and Bosra."
